Alzheimers Centre of Excellence
Our Alzheimer Centre of Excellence (ACE) was created to support individuals with advanced dementia. A combination of specialized care techniques, state of the art environmental and technological supports, and community environments help to promote quality of life and maximize comfort for the people we serve.
The ACE community offers a personal care home setting with secured exits to ensure the safety of people who may wander. Riverview’s ACE communities are located on AB1 and AB2. Each wing has 15 private suites, arranged in 3 groups of 5 suites each, with their own 2-piece bathroom, for a total of 60 ACE community suites.
Eligibility for the ACE Community
- Individuals who are over 50 years of age and have been paneled and accepted for personal care home placement.
- Individuals who have a diagnosis of dementia or dementia related illness and are medically and psychiatrically stable.
- Individuals who have behavioral management or safety needs that cannot be met in a general personal care home environment.
Objectives of the program
- To provide supportive care for people who are no longer capable of living independently in the community or in a general personal care home community.
- To optimize each person’s quality of life.
- To maintain the highest degree of functional independence possible.
- To provide a safe and secure environment while maintaining a positive approach to care.
Care provided in the ACE Communities
People who live in our ACE communities have access to a full range of care and supports that includes assistance with activities of daily living, and assessment and intervention by an interdisciplinary team. Individualized care plans are developed and regularly updated. Professional care includes physician coverage, nursing, recreation, occupational therapy, physical therapy, dietitian, social work, spiritual care, and clinical pharmacy. Family care partners are integral to the team and are invited to participate in care planning and decision making.
Features of the ACE Communities
Riverview’s ACE communities are located on AB1 and AB2. Each A and B wing has its own kitchen, dining room and lounge with TV and DVD.
The people we serve have 24-hour-a-day access to the dining rooms, where meals and snacks are served. These rooms are also used for activities and socialization. Each wing has 15 private suites with their own 2-piece bathroom for a total of 60 ACE community suites.
The grounds of Riverview are expansive, with lots of trees, shrubbery, flowers in summer, and space for regular recreation events and special performances. There is a secure garden adjacent to the Pavilion with wheelchair accessible walkways and a gazebo where residents can spend time in the company of family, visitors, staff or volunteers.

Your Questions
How can my family member come to live on one of your ace units?
We work with the WRHA’s Long Term Care Access Centre to determine who gets admitted. Prior to coming to live at Riverview you or your family member will be assessed to determine how best your care needs can be met. This is usually done by community care providers from home care and your physician. If you are in a hospital and cannot return home, you’ll be assessed by members of your care team and the long term care access centre team to see what your needs are and what options are available. The long term access centre keeps track of who is waiting. As beds become available, applications from our waiting list are sent to us by the Access Centre.
